The San Juan Islands are a stunningly beautiful area in the Pacific Northwest, full of opportunities for fun and adventure. But what really makes this part of the world special are its whales. From mid-spring to mid-fall, orcas, humpback, minke whales and other species flock to these waters, making for an incredible experience for visitors and locals alike. If you’re looking for a chance to explore the magical world of whales, then a trip to the San Juan Islands should be at the top of your list!
Types of Whales Found in the San Juan Islands
The San Juan Islands make up part of what is known as “the Whale Trail” – an area that is home to some of the most diverse whale populations on Earth. During your stay here, you may get lucky enough to spot any number of species, including humpback whales, orca (or killer) whales, gray whales, minke whales, and even Pacific white-sided dolphins or Dall’s porpoises. Each one is unique and fascinating in its own way!

Orcas
Orcas are the type of whale most commonly seen in this area. These majestic creatures can reach lengths up to 32 feet long and weigh up to 6 tons each. Orcas have distinct black-and-white coloration with white patches on their underbellies and “eye spots”; they are also famous for their loud vocalizations which can be heard from miles away! Our local residents (J, K, and L pods) are well known by local tour companies and we never tire of seeing them.

Humpback Whales
Humpbacks are some of the most acrobatic cetaceans found in these waters; they often jump out of the water when they breach (or leap), giving whale watchers quite a show! They can reach lengths up to 52 feet long and weigh up to 40 tons. Humpbacks have distinctive white markings on their tail fins that can easily be spotted from afar.

Gray Whales
Gray whales are named for their mottled gray coloring which helps them blend into their surroundings when underwater. Gray whales migrate along this coastline each year between April and November; during mating season (April-May) they tend to stay closer to shore as males compete for females’ attention!

Minke Whales
Minke whales are much smaller than humpbacks and orcas; they typically reach lengths between 24-30 feet long and weigh up to 10 tons each! Minke whales have distinctive white stripes along their flanks that give them a unique look; they’re also very curious animals who often come close to boats if given enough time.
With so many different types of whales living in these waters all year round, it’s no wonder why people flock here from around the world every summer! Whether you’re looking for a chance to go whale watching or just want a glimpse at these majestic creatures from afar, there’s something here for everyone at the San Juan Islands. And don’t forget to visit the Center for Whale Research and The Whale Museum to learn more about the conservation of our whale species in the San Juan Islands. So grab your binoculars (or on a tour boat!) and head out on an adventure you won’t soon forget!
